This morning we spent about two hours at the Marlborough Research Center learning about aquifer water usage and wine development. Learning about wine development was pretty interesting (sorry water! You're important but fungus and insects are cooler). I don't know much about agriculture but learning about the battle with various pests such as the Ground Weta was very neat to hear about.
From there we went to Picton and spent some time souvenir shopping during our break! I bought postcards that I can actually mail to everyone (so if you are on my mailing list look out for those!) There were quite few cool shops in the town and it was absolutely gorgeous. The other very important thing that I bought was motion sickness medicine for the ferry. We were oh so lucky and got to cross on one of the stormiest days with very rough ocean. We drove onto the ferry in the buses after waiting in the queue and then walked to the uppermost deck. Erin and I started out sitting on this upper deck towards the front but once we hit the open ocean and weren't in the protected channel anymore we had to go to the middle of the boat on the lower deck so that we could stand the rocking. It was amazing to see the boat rise and fall with the waves for a little bit though.
We arrived in Wellington around 6 PM, dropped our stuff off, and went grocery shopping for tomorrow night. Afterwards a small group of us went to Southern Cross for dinner because they have a special on Monday nights where you can get your food on volcanic rocks! Unfortunately we were dissapointed because they sell out by 5:30 and we were there at 7:00. Their food was amazing though and they had great cocktails. We stopped at a couple of other bars along the main road and got a drink or two before running into the rest of the main group. I ended up leaving at 11 PM because it was a very quiet Monday night in Wellington.
